MEET ANDY GUY (LOOPED) @ BIRMINGHAM SHOWCASE FESTIVAL 8.10.11

by ASH DHINDSA

Hi Andy, how’s it going? So you’re gonna be playing for Front of House on October 8th, obviously you’re new to the line-up, tell us what you’re most looking forward to?

I’m all good thanks, the thing I’m most looking forward to is crowd reaction, there really is nothing like an electric reaction when you drop in a big tune or sample in bass lines and you see people moving like crazy to your chosen beats.

How much do you know about The Rainbow Venues? And (if any) what are your expectations about the place?
Personally I don’t know a great deal about the Rainbow venues, however I always hear good things when I’ve asked people how they got on. By looking at the line-ups though you can tell that they know what they’re doing and there definitely sticking to their guns and keeping the underground music scene, so going by that I’m expecting big things.

If you could highlight anything, what should the people be expecting from your set?
Hypnotic melody’s and fat bass-lines fitting in nicely with the Cellar.

What’s your favourite thing to do right now?
Favourite thing at the moment is experimenting in the production side of house music, it takes an age to get where you want but when you start to see a track come together you know it’s worth it!

And worst?
Getting up early…

What’s your first memory of wanting to become a DJ?
I’ve always loved electronic music from a young age, owning my first pair of turntables at 13, but after a few years I gave up being a bedroom DJ. However a trip to the White isle in 2010 soon re-kindled the love for House music and the underground scene altogether so I upgraded to some CDJ’s and well, here I am.

Best thing about being a DJ?
The best thing is when you see people moving to your choice of tracks, complimented by your mixing skills, you know you’ve done a good job when everyone is still moving.

Tell us a bit more about your ongoing project, Looped?
Looped is a night that me and two other DJ’s set up and co-run in Cambridge. We’ve been very fortunate to play a few venues we could only have dreamed of, such as Ministry of Sound and Egg Club, London. We still play monthly in various spots in the hometown, inviting guests down to come play. Also getting on the festival scene Looped made its debut at the electronic festival ‘Field Fest’ in July this year, so all in all Looped is looking very promising.

What’s unique about the underground house scene in Cambridge? And what are you expecting in Brum?
Cambridge’s underground scene comprises of a few music projects that are around, so it didn’t take long to become a part of it. What is unique though is that it is growing, people are slowly moving away from the main stream and getting their teeth into the underground scene where they can appreciate the different sound. Having already experienced Birmingham’s underground scene, I know for sure that the 8th is gonna go off big time!

Front of House... Looped, Collaboration on the cards?
Without a doubt, we love meeting new people inviting guest DJ’s down to play at our Looped nights, so a collaboration is a definite one for the diary!

Where’s the best venue you’ve played in your career so far? And for what reasons?
Best venue would have to be Ministry of Sound, London for obvious reasons really it’s Ministry! Me and the Looped guys actually headlined the Loft room that night, which did concern us at first as at the same time we were playing the main headliner ‘Fedde Le grand’ was playing to. But as soon as we graced the decks the Loft room was packed out, the energy was crazy, clubbers went mad for the tracks we were laying down, a definite one to remember!

Finally, if there’s anything interesting you would want people to know about yourself, what would it be?
Bit random but I used to be a fire-fighter.
